Treasure

Dear friends, do you know what is the greatest treasure on earth?  Well, let me start by saying that life is short and meaningless.  As such, how we live this short life matters.  The Bible says “One who pursues the desires of the flesh mindlessly are no different from the beast that perish.”

The greatest treasure for mankind on this earth is simply the free gift of salvation that enables one to enter into the Kingdom of Heaven.

What should be our purpose in life if we so desire to attain this greatest treasure?  Should we live aimlessly for material riches, fame, power and pleasure or should we live to enter the everlasting Kingdom of Heaven?  Unfortunately, many are deluded in seeking for ephemeral things that will soon disappear.Friends, to enter the Kingdom of Heaven,  firstly, we need to receive the remission of sins and obtain everlasting life.  One may gain everything under the heavens but what use is it if he loses his life?   We are leading a meaningless life if we live just for our flesh to enjoy fleeting prosperity and then to be eternally punished after death.

One of the bible characters that truly impressed me is Zacchaeus.  He was a chief tax collector and a rich man during the time of Jesus.  According to the story, Zacchaeus could never find any satisfaction from his worldly prosperity.  He yearned to find God.  He longed to receive everlasting life and to be saved from his sins.  When he heard that Jesus Christ, the Son of God was coming to his town, Jericho, Zacchaeus longed to meet Jesus personally.  However, the crowd was too much for him.  Being short in stature, he climbed the Sycamore tree to catch a glimpse of Jesus.   Jesus saw him clinging onto the tree and looked up and said “ Zacchaeus, make haste and come down, for today I must stay at your house.”  Luke 19:1-10

Anyone who wants to meet Jesus must have the same mindset as that of Zacchaeus.  He knew he was a sinner before God.  Put differently, he was poor in spirit even though the riches of this world has filled up his heart.  He recognized that he was a sinner destined for eternal judgment and therefore sought God’s mercy.  Whoever wants to receive the remission of sins and become righteous by faith  must first admit his sins to the Lord.  This confession of faith has the power to grant us entrance into God’s Kingdom.  The perfect Gospel of the Lord which has the power to make sinners righteous, will then wash away all the sins of a person’s heart once and for all.   The Lord will seal him with the Holy Spirit.

Therefore, the wisest person is someone who has received the remission of sins by believing in the  Righteousness of God.  However, God’s Word declares that one   cannot enter the Kingdom of Heaven if he has not received the remission of sins through the Gospel of water and the Spirit .  John 3:5

Jesus has become the Saviour of sinners.  We can be delivered from God’s judgment by our faith in the baptism of Jesus, His blood and His divinity.  Jesus is the door to the Kingdom of Heaven.  The absolute finished work of Christ is accomplished when Jesus received the sins of mankind through the laying on of hands by John the Baptist.  John 1:29.  Now that He has become the sacrificial lamb for all man, He has to die for our sins by being cursed and condemned on the cross. His resurrection has provided us a new life by faith to live in this world and to possess this greatest treasure given freely by God.
