People Of Faith

Friday, January 29th, 2016

Faith is vitally important in the life of the redeemed community. It is by faith that we are saved, justified and cleansed to serve His Church. By faith we please God, admit our dependence on Him and continually rely upon Him and His grace. It is only through faith, the redeemed community is able to experience the promises and reality of God.

As such, the ‘people of faith’ need an anchor that will hold during the storms of life. That anchor is our faith in Christ, the hope of glory. In 1 Peter 1:3-12, the passage denotes the God centered faith that is able to hold us during the storms of life. When Peter wrote this letter, the Early Church was undergoing a difficult time in upholding their faith.  Likewise, it is not easy to live by faith without compromising our stand.

Peter gives us some precious insights into how the ‘people of faith’ ought to live in the midst of adverse circumstances.

1. Timeless Faith   1 Peter 1:4-5

The question is not if we have faith, in fact everyone has faith. The atheist has faith whereby his rational reasoning has removed the possibility of God.  He has faith in his intellectual ability. Others have faith in their abilities, skills, connections, friends, family and themselves. Everyone has faith. The question is, where our faith is anchored. Sooner or later the storms of life will blow. Can the anchor of faith hold?  Peter gives us three reasons on why it is important to put our faith in Christ.  The faith in Christ is imperishable, incorruptible and unfading. Faith in God is kept in heaven. Jesus wants us to lay our treasures in heaven where it cannot be destroyed. If our faith is set on the things of this world, then our faith will perish. If we place our faith in a leader, only in a matter of time, the corruptible nature of the individual will be revealed. However, Christ has no sin and our faith in Him is incorruptible. Many people change according to time in regard to fashions, trends, ideas, innovations. However, our faith in Christ would be unfading.

2.  Tested Faith   1 Peter 1:6-8

Our faith must be anchored in the timeless nature of Christ. Countless people have placed their faith in Christ and found that the anchor holds.  Peter himself survived some incredible storms of life. In this passage Peter alludes that faith in Christ is a tested faith that is valuable, revealing and centered on Christ.  Peter attest that our faith in Christ is like gold. Gold when tested causes the impurities to surface.  Likewise, when our impurities surfaces and are removed, faith becomes more valuable. Gold is a standard by which we define value. Our faith in the baptism, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ is far more valuable than gold.

After the refining process gold reveals its purity.  ‘People of faith’ ought to reflect Jesus’ righteous actto the world. As we grow in Christ, we learn more about Him and His love. In verse 8, Peter denotes that our faith is centered on our love for Christ. Though we have not seen Him, our faith causes us to believe that He exist and rewards those who earnestly seek Him.

3. True Faith   1 Peter 1:10-12

In post modern world, we often hear the statement that what works for you may not work for me. In this passage Peter establishes that faith in Christ is timeless, valuable, revealing and full of love. The prophets of the OT anticipated the coming Messiah according to the promise of God.  They patiently waited with hope and encouragement. Though it did not happen in their time but the prophecies came to pass in our time. In fact, now our faith is established on the Messiah Who has come and saved mankind from sin. The ‘people of faith’ believe that Jesus was baptized, died and rose again to save us from sin. Even angels are longing to look into the fulfillment of these prophecies.

Dear friends, would our anchor of faith hold in the storms of life? Is our faith built upon the Word? Is our faith tested and tried? Do we understand how valuable, revealing and full of love the faith in Christ is?  Is our faith timeless?

The time to anchor our hope and faith in Christ is now….before the storm shows up.
