Three Gifts From The Resurrected Jesus

Friday, May 13th, 2016

19 On the evening of that first day of the week, when the disciples were together, with the doors locked for fear of the Jewish leaders, Jesus came and stood among them and said, “Peace be with you!” 20 After he said this, he showed them his hands and side. The disciples were overjoyed when they saw the Lord.  21 Again Jesus said, “Peace be with you! As the Father has sent me, I am sending you.” 22 And with that he breathed on them and said, “Receive the Holy Spirit. 23 If you forgive anyone’s sins, their sins are forgiven; if you do not forgive them, they are not forgiven.”    John 20:19-23

After His resurrection the Lord has given us three spiritual gifts for those who believe and have received perfect remission of sins.  Faith in the Lord’s resurrection is very important.  After having taken all our sins through His baptism and dying on the cross, Jesus resurrected in three days.  When we have this faith of believing in Jesus having risen from the grave, we are clothed in the blessings of rising up again, not finishing our lives with the death of our flesh.

Those who believe in Jesus resurrection get to possess this faith that they will also be resurrected after the death of their flesh.  This is why it is tremendously an important faith.

After Jesus died on the cross His disciples were trembling with fear.  They were thinking that everything including following the Lord came to an abrupt end.  They locked up doors and windows in fear.  They were worried that they would get arrested for having followed Jesus and die because of Him.  They were feeling helpless on how to get along in this harsh world for there no longer was Jesus Who had been protecting them.  Although they had clearly locked all entrance into their home, Jesus appeared by coming through the wall.  It was possible because the resurrected body of Jesus was a divine body that could transcend time and space.

After His resurrection, what did our Lord give us first?

  1. Peace John 20:21

Peace is exactly what He gave us.  In the hearts of those who have been born again by the Gospel of God’s Righteousness there is peace.  We will always find peace inside the hearts of those of us who believe in Jesus’ righteous work.  At times, the body feels weary but at least the heart feels calm because of this incredible faith.  Jesus said twice that we will have peace.  Peace arises in our hearts owing to the overflowing joy by professing ‘now there is no sin in my heart.  Jesus has taken it all away!’

  1. Holy Spirit John 20:22

Besides peace, what else did Jesus give us?  That is undoubtedly the Holy Spirit.  The resurrected Lord told the disciples to receive the Holy Spirit.  This means that the Lord Jesus has given us the Holy Spirit as a gift to those who have received the remission of sins by believing that He came to this earth, took  on the sins of all mankind through baptism and was resurrected from the dead.

  1. Authority and Power John 20:23

In Verse 23, our Lord continue to say “If you forgive anyone’s sins, their sins are forgiven; if you do not forgive them, they are not forgiven.”   Thisis the privilege that God has given to only those who have received the remission of sins and baptized in the Holy Spirit.  It is our privilege and duty to spread this Gospel to others.  These people will then also come to receive the remission of sins by believing in this true Gospel.  There is a pre-condition for this to come about.  Sinners can be remitted from their sins only if we spread the Gospel to them.  If we don’t, there is no way for them to receive the remission of sins.  Their remission of sins therefore depends on us.
