How Do I Make My ‘Position’ My ‘ Experience’?

Thursday, July 21st, 2016

11 Likewise you also, reckon yourselves to be dead indeed to sin, but alive to God in Christ Jesus our Lord. 12 Therefore do not let sin reign in your mortal body, that you should obey it in its lusts. 13 And do not present your members  as  instruments of unrighteousness  to  sin,  but present yourselves to God as being alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness to God.  Rom 6:11-13

When God planned man’s reconciliation, He obviously did not mean for us to be holy and victorious in our ‘position’ and defeated in our ‘experience’.  His plan has always been that our position and experience be brought into line with each other.

This can be a reality only by our finding out how fantastic our Heavenly Father is and what He has made us to be because of our union with Christ in His baptism, death, burial, resurrection and ascension to the Father’s right hand.

When we fail to live in the reality of a new position, daily experiencing the forgiveness, freedom, acceptance and empowering of the Spirit, we short change not only God but ourselves and those whose lives we touch who so desperately need to see the reality of God in a human life.

Listed below are several keys :

  1. Our ‘Position’ Is The Basis Of All Victory

Throughout this month, my messages on ‘sanctify’ is intended to stir your hearts to consider the new position in Christ as the basis of all victories and consistent Christian living.  There is no other way to be set free from the power of the Law, the sin nature and Satan.  In Rom 1-5, Paul lays out the redemptive work of Christ and shows us that it is our remedy for the penalty of sins.  However, in chapters 6-8 of Romans, we see our complete identification with Christ in His baptism, death, burial and resurrection to discover that that’s the remedy for overcoming the power of sin.  Without the  power  of sin  being  dealt with  in our lives, we will be helpless victims of Satan’s wiles and our own fleshly lusts even though we are born again.  There will be no hope of deliverance from depression, defeat, discouragement, failure and doubt.

  1. Out Of Adam, Into Christ

To be in complete union with Christ is to have been legally taken out of our relationship to the first Adam and his ruin and placed into the Last Adam, Jesus and thus made a partaker of all that He is.  Adam and Christ demonstrate the principle that any can be affected for good or evil by one person’s deed.  In Rom 5:12-21, Paul shows this analogy between Adam and Christ – the mess that Adam got mankind into and the means by which Christ got us out of it.  He says sin entered through Adam but we were forgiven our sins through Christ.  Death came by Adam’s transgression but life came to us by Christ’s obedience.  When we are born again, the baptism of the Holy Spirit is the ministry of the Spirit which takes us out of Adam and puts us into union with Christ.  1 Cor 12:13

  1. Christ Baptized & Died For What I ‘Am’ & What I Have ‘Done’

Christ bore our sins through His baptism and willingly hung on the cross to pay our ransom.  In doing that, God judged our sinful deeds and removed them as a barrier to God.  Now we see that not only were our sins on Christ while He was on the cross but because we have been so totally baptized with Christ in the mind of God, we ourselves were also hanging there on the cross with Jesus.  By taking us to the cross with Him and then into the grave, God forever put to death not only our sinful deeds but also our sinful selves.  Hence, removing not only what we did but what we were (hostile to God, unrighteous, etc) as a barrier between ourselves and God.  God provided forgiveness for what we have done and deliverance for what we are.

Conclusion

Dear friends, not only are our sins not offensive to God but we are not either.  We are so accepted by the Father because of our union with Christ, that in His mind He sees us as actually being seated in Heaven in Christ.  We must align our experience with our position in Christ by faith on a moment by moment awareness to make our ‘position’ our ‘experience’.
