Made Alive To Serve

For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them.” Eph 2:10

Why does God save us?  What is the purpose of God’s salvation in Jesus Christ?  Some say that salvation is so that we can go to Heaven some day.  We hear that very often.  Maybe that’s what we think.  Is that the purpose of God’s salvation?

It is noteworthy that when we read the Scripture verse above, we wont find that answer in there.  It is not in the broader context either.  I am not denying the reality of Heaven.  I am not denying either that after we die as believers in the Gospel of God’s Righteousness that comprises Jesus’ baptism, death and resurrection, we do go to Heaven.  However,  our question is why God saves us?

Let us glean Eph 2:10 to know precisely why God saves us?  Paul says, “For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them.”  We notice four parts in our text that Paul uses to show the purpose why God saves.

  1. Person – His Workmanship

Paul is addressing who we really are as true believers in the Gospel of God’s Righteousness.  Those who have the three witnesses of the water (baptism), blood (death) and Spirit (resurrection) in their hearts are God’s workmanship in progress.  God is moulding and shaping us into the very image of Christ in true holiness and righteousness.

We are like God’s painting.  God has been touching us up for a long time now.  He is still working in us with care and love.   He puts the right touches to make us His master piece.

  1. Property – Created In Christ Jesus

What does Paul mean by that?  Usually a painter would gather all the fine materials like the canopy, brushes and right colors for a quality finish. However, when God began creating us in Christ Jesus, God did not have such fine material to start with.  In fact, outside of faith in God’s Righteousness, we are sinful.

Spiritually speaking, in and of ourselves, we are rotting corpses.  We are dead!  In Eph 2:1, Paul says, “as for you, you are dead in your transgressions and sins….world.”  To create us in Jesus Christ, God sent His Son to shoulder our sins through His baptism and die on the cross to pay for our sins.  Jesus rose from the dead and poured His Holy Spirit so that we might be made alive.  Spiritually, we were garbage but God turned us into a priceless art.

  1. Purpose – To Do Good Works

What is the purpose of God’s salvation?  It is not just to go to Heaven but to do good works.  We don’t do good works only later or sometime, like, when we go to Heaven.  No!  We do good works now!  Good works now is our salvation!  This is God’s grace!  This is God’s blessing now.  In Jesus Christ we are created to do good works.  Our privilege, responsibility and calling is to do good works.  This is why we are saved!  What is good works?  Good works arise out of true faith in God’s Righteousness.  God wills and motivate us through His Spirit to live, defend and spread His Gospel.

  1. Predestination – Prepared Beforehand

Our whole lives are prepared beforehand for service and called to do good works in Christ.  We are predestined for such a purpose even before the foundation of the world.  It is God’s ultimate desire that all men will be born again to fulfill this divine purpose.  As such, we must be courageous, confident and walk in obedience to do the good works which God had prepared beforehand for us.  This is the perfect will for all born again children in Christ.

Dear friends, there are so many ways to serve.

Are we doing God’s work?  God is calling us!  We must heed the call.

May God richly bless our ministry at NCCkl and beyond.
