“In addition to all, taking up the shield of faith with which you will be able to extinguish all the flaming missiles of the evil one.” Eph 6:16

A Roman soldier’s shield is normally about two feet wide by four feet long. He used it to ward off the blows of the enemy and also to hide behind when enemy archers would let go a volley of arrows. The Romans could kneel down on the ground and erect a wall of shields around them to block out the flaming missiles.

Satan is always firing his hot darts at us in order to get inside of us with guilt or with some accusation. If we have the shield of faith protecting us, our simple implicit faith of knowing that Christ is more than able to meet our needs would become adequate protection right there.

Faith is simply our response to God’s ability to handle our lives. If we really believe He is able, then faith flows out of us. If we don’t know how trustworthy He is, then no amount of spiritual gimmicks is going to make us trust Him at a time when we need faith.

Sadly, faith is such a misunderstood concept. We often hear people praying for more faith but strictly speaking, that’s a wrong prayer.  Once we are born again by the water and Spirit which constitutes Jesus’ baptism  and  death, our sixth sense is restored to our spirit.  This enables us to have all the faith that we need.

We need to realize that faith operates in our re-created spirit just as the five senses operate in our body. Take the sense of light, for example. We can have 20/20 vision and yet look at a mountain fifty miles away and not see it very clearly. In this case, we don’t need a better eye sight, we need to get closer to the mountain so that it will come into better focus.

That’s the way faith works. We are all given 20/20 faith when we were born again by the Gospel Truth of the water and Spirit. However, faith needs an object in order for it to function. Jesus is that object, revealed to us through His Word.

If Jesus has not seemed as real to you as you might want, where you felt that you needed more faith to bring Him closer, I hope you can see from this that what you really need is to get a closer view of this wonderful Object.

We do this by getting into His Word and start seeing just Who He is and what He has done for us and promises still to give us. Our faith won’t grow but our concept of Jesus will. The end result will be the same in our lives. We will start to believe in Him more and find ourselves loving and responding to Jesus in a way we have never done before.
